Blue Odyssey. Coloured Horse Chestnut Burr.

So named because fruit or nuts from the tree are toxic to horses and despite having “chestnut” in its common name, it’s not closely related to the wood that has traditionally been referred to as Chestnut in the Castanea genus. Horse Chestnut is actually related to its American counterpart in the Aesculus genus, Buckeye.

Naturally it is a very white wood making it difficult to see the beautiful burr figure, I have used two different lightfast blue dyes to bring out that hidden figure and finished it with multiple coats of an eco-friendly waterborne gloss lacquer.  Some small cracks appeared during the drying process, these have been filled with turquoise holographic epoxy adding a little bit of sparkle. The Spalted Holly lid has a 12tpi handcut thread with a corresponding collar fitted into the opening ensuring a secure closure.

It measures 210mm H x 215mm D (8 ¼" H x 8 ½" D) and has a capacity of 3.2ltrs (195cu in)
