Pyro Engraved Turkey Oak

This medium single urn was a finished piece that had been sitting around in the workshop for a while, I liked the shape but the Turkey Oak (quercus cerris) was fairly uninspiring so I decided to decorate it with some pyrography.

Description

This medium single urn was a finished piece that had been sitting around in the workshop for a while, I liked the shape but the Turkey Oak (quercus cerris) was fairly uninspiring so I decided to decorate it with some pyrography. The term Pyrography means “writing with fire” from the Greek pur (fire) and graphos (writing). Its done using a pyrography pen in a random freehand pattern. It began with incised lines to create the borders and these were then filled in with dots and covering the whole surface took approximately 12 hours. The Pyro texture was carried into the She Oak (casuarina cristata) lid which has a hand cut 12tpi thread ensuring a secure closure.
