This piece of Ash was brought by a student it to use on a hollowing course. We discussed the suitability of using it on the course and decided it wasn't suitable for the basic hollowing course but he wanted to give it a go because he had brought it with him, it had been growing in his garden so he created the outside shape with some guidance. In doing so he got to understand why it was a difficult piece of wood for his first project, he found out that the knots where difficult to deal with on the outside The part turned blank sat around for a few years and because it hadn't been hollowed out it developed quite a few splits, normally I wouldn't have bothered with finishing it but I liked the grain patterns so I did I filling all the splits with Bronze epoxy. The threaded insert is Brown Oak and the lid is part of a pine burr ball that had been growing 12m up a tree iand it came to me from a sawmill in Gloucestershire.
It has been finished with four coats of an eco-friendly hardwax oil which requires nothing more thn dusting.
It measures 275mm H x 170mm D (10 3/4" x 6 5/8") and has a capacity of 3.1 litres ( 190 cu in)
