English Cherry with a London Plane Lid

Cherry heartwood is a light pinkish brown when freshly cut but darkens to a deeper golden brown with time and upon exposure to light with the sapwood is a pale yellowish color. This piece has all these characteristics, showing a large patch of the creamy sapwood, which depending on the size of the tree can be up to two inches thick. It also shows how quickly the tree grew evidenced by the quite wide growth rings.
The lid is made from a piece of London Plane which was quarter sawn which shows off the chatoyance of the medulary rays.
It has a 12tpi handcut thread with a corresponding Robinia Pseudo Acacia collar and has been finished with four coats of my favourite eco-friendly hardwax oil which needs no maintenance other thann the occasional dusting.

It measurres 285mm H x 160mm D and has a capacity of 3.0ltrs (11 ¼" x 6 ¼") ( 183 cu in)
